"He'd been a gray ghost before, now he was a fallen angel. The man was a chameleon, capable of turning into anything he wanted, and he assured her those persona were lethal. And she believed him."

THE STORY: Genevieve Spenser is a high powered attorney who believes she has given up her idealistic views. When she comes to get signatures on a document for an important client of the firm, she ends up in the middle of a kidnapping perpetrated by the assistant of her client. Peter Jensen at first appears bland and non-threatening, but Genevieve learns that Peter is extremely dangerous and deadly. Peter knows that the innocent Ms. Spenser is likely to be a casualty in the Committee's attempt to prevent more damaging events. From the beginning, however, Peter is unwilling to sacrifice Genevieve even though he knows he will likely have no choice.

OPINION: I just love Stuart's anti-heroes who are especially good in the Ice Series. This book is filled with action and adventure and reluctant romance. This is definitely not your sweet loving book. This book is raw and harsh and sometimes it is difficult to see how these characters can have a happy ending. Peter is a highly trained killer and he knows that there is no clear line between the good guys and the bad guys. Peter almost immediately doesn't want to have Genevieve be a victim. He is known as the Iceman and she begins to melt him despite himself. Genevieve believes herself jaded and cold but doesn't realize that she is an infant compared to the dangerous people she encounters here. A reader will not get an intense emotional connection between these characters. At times their relationship seems more hate than love, but somehow it works. Despite both their wishes, these characters fall in love and form a strong bond.

WORTH MENTIONING: Stuart has a particular style with her heroes who are killers and are always on the edge of being dangerous to the heroine.

FINAL DECISION: Love, love Stuart's ruthless anti-heroes. This is a tremendous romantic thriller with action and adventure galore.

CONNECTED BOOKS: COLD AS ICE is the second book in the Ice series about the covert agency known as the Committee. While there is some overlap of characters, COLD AS ICE can be read independent of the first book in the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Cold As Ice The Ice Series Anne Stuart 9780778323563 Books Reviews

I read two of Ms. Stuart's books; this one and Black Ice. I feel conflicted about both. Ms. Stuart is not a great writer. One of the most maddening things she does, which is basic to reader comprehension, is fail to leave a double white space, or asterisks, when changing the point-of-view. I was into the second sentence of a new paragraph before I realized the narrator had changed! She also doesn’t set up events very well usually done by two prior references before a main event. She just decides something is going to happen and does it, which can be jolting to the reader. Because of these and other writing failures, it is hard to develop any emotional attachment to her characters. I never really cared what happened to them.

Despite her lack of writing finesse, Ms. Stuart is a very good story teller, and is able to finesse the interplay between the hero and heroine quite nicely. They are believable and what you expect to find in a romance novel the broad shouldered alpha male and the succulent female waiting to be molded and revealed. It’s worth a read if you like the genre.
After a lot of epic and high fantasy reads this was actually a great pallet cleanser. Nothing like a romance that begins with the Hero trying to think of reasons not to kill the heroine. Look it isn’t specifically Peter’s fault Genevieve was just in the wrong place at the wrong time but he doesn’t like it because she is really an innocent and he’d rather not have to hurt her.

Genevieve only had one stop to make before her vacation it should be easy. Get Harry Van Dorn to sign some papers and then be on her way off the grid. Harry has some other ideas and tries to waylay Genevieve into staying for some fun times. While Harry is handsome and a billionaire he isn’t what Genevieve even wants to consider playing around with. Meanwhile she isn’t sure why but she feels a slight tub towards Peter who is doing his best to be bland and unobtrusive.

Peter needs to find a way to get rid of Harry and somehow keep Genevieve alive. This goes against everything the agency he works for wants and might cost him something in the long run but what he is feeling for her, well lust or love or whatnot it eventually just will not be denied.

-- "He remembered everything he knew about her, including her sexual history and the things she didn’t like, and he knew she was going to do every one of them and like it. She was going to be on top, and she was going to go down on him, and she was going to tell him she loved him. And he didn’t know what would cost her more."

I liked the chemistry between Peter and Genevieve much more than the couple in the prior book. I found Peter easier to like than Bastian as an antihero. He is smooth in a different way and his seduction of Genevieve was steamy.

This story isn’t perfect there are a few things in the plot that got really glossed over and the ending was a bit rushed. I like a little more in my wrap up of a story. Overall it was a good time though. The villain was almost like a bond villain with some added sexual deviance and Peter played a pretty decent hero all tales told.

I do enjoy the antiheroes of this series and look forward to the next installment featuring Takashi.
